Pont do the double over Aberbeeg

Aberbeeg were the visitors to Pontllanfraith who had their first game at the Welfare ground in over 3 months. Pont were looking to do the league double over a team for the first time since beating Newport Saracens home and away three seasons ago.

In cold, boggy conditions with the wind at their backs Aberbeeg started the better of the two teams. The visitors spent much of the opening 20 minutes inside Pont territory and Pont's indiscipline allowed Aberbeeg to attempt 3 kicks at goal. Luckily for Pontllanfraith, only 1 of them was successful. The remainder of the half was a scrappy, scoreless affair and Pont failed to capitalise when Aberbeeg were reduced to 14 after a yellow card.

HT. Pontllanfraith 0-3 Aberbeeg

After a good telling off from coach Gordon Thomas at half time, Pontllanfraith were much improved after the break. Good hands in midfield saw Hooker Nathan Meyrick in space out wide and he finished like a seasoned outside centre. Soon after Pont had their second try, after recieving a hospital pass from prop Ashley Williams, Mark Counsell did well to get the ball to Chudd Meyrick Parker who then offloaded to Jonah Lomu Karl Fallon on the half way line who then proceeded to beat 5 defenders and score under the posts.

Aberbeeg then breifly threatened the Pont try line with a series of Scrums inside Ponts 22 but the Pontllanfraith defence was much improved in comparison to last weeks defeat and after Chudd Meyrick Parkers turnover, Pontllanfraith scored a length of the field try thanks to some lovely running from full back Joe and try scorer Tom Haddock. This broke Aberbeeg's resolve and it was all Pont from there on and after a nice break from flanker Chris Kelly, Adrian Greening should've scored Pont's fourth, but the pass from Mark Counsell was erratic.

The bonus point try did eventually arrive 10 minutes before full time. A well placed chip over the top of the Aberbeeg defence was scooped up by Lee Butcher but he came up just short of the line, but Pont recycled quickly and after an audacious dummy, Chris Price dived under the posts like a leaping Salmon to secure Pontllanfraith the 5 points.
