Captain breaks try record in big win.

Pont hosted Abersychan last Saturday looking to get their promotion hopes back on track after a narrow defeat to Newport Saracens. With Jeff Williams, Mark Counsell and Gareth Tiley unavailable, there were a few changes in the pack and Mark Johnston made his debut for the club on the wing.

The opening 20 minutes was a tight, scrappy affair, Pont got turned over a few times gifting the visitors with plenty of possesion but Pont's defence was up to the task. After good work by winger Rhys Purnell, Tom Haddock crossed for the games opening score. After a few dominant scrums from Pont, injuries and sin bins forced Abersychan to move to passive scrums for the remainder of the game. And from the first passive scrum, Pont scored a try of the season contender. Ben Walker recieved the ball in Pont territory, sold a beautiful dummy to his opposite number and passed to Rhys Powell who beat the first man and put Nathan Meyrick through for a superb score. Another break from Ben Walker came up just short of the posts, but a few phases later Jarrad Hook crashed over the line for Ponts third. Great sniping from scrum half Matthew Davis and great support play from Chris Price gained Pont around 40 yards and two phases later Nathan Meyrick was over in the corner for his second just before half time.

In the second half, as the away side tired and the game opened up, great support lines from openside Nathan Meyrick saw the Captain cross for another 4 tries giving him a total of 6 for the game, breaking Daryll Eatwells club record in the process. There was a debut try for Mark "Sparky" Johnston and a late try for Andrew Deneen who was first man to get to a well placed Matthew Davis kick. The ref called time early with Pont 66-0 victors.

Shout out to Rhys Powell for a great performace off the tee, kicking 8 from 10 conversion attempts.

With no league fixture this week for Hollybush and Newport Saracens, Pont travel to Cwmcarn United looking to gain 5 points on both promotion rivals.
