Pontllanfraith traveled to Pye Corner for an unseasonally sunny encounter with Whiteheads. Pont started strong and finished strong, but it was the 60 minutes of gutless rugby inbetween that was the downfall against a very well drilled Whiteheads outfit.
Pontllanfraith started brightly despite playing into a hefty breeze, winning the early collisions and stringing together some nice phases which lead to an early penatly that full back Daniel Morgan converted to give the visitors an early lead. From this point on, the homeside took control of both territory and possesion. Eventually the pressure forced the opening try of the match for Whiteheads, poor lineout defence saw the home side score from a driving maul. Soon after the Whiteheads forwards were at it again and the second try followed. Pont suffered a further set back when Harry Miles was sin binned and when Pont failed to deal with a chip and chase, the hosts went under for the easiest of third tries to end the first half.
HT Whiteheads 17-3 Pontllanfraith
Pontllanfraith did have a few chances to get back into the game after the break but the final pass never went to hands on each occasion. The second half was a scrappier affair with numerous knock ons and the referee became very whistle happy. Whiteheads increased their lead with a penalty before a nasty knee injury to a Whiteheads player forced a lengthy pause in play. Everyone at Pontllanfraith wishes him a speedy recovery. When play resumed Whiteheads were making yards with ease as Pontllanfraith struggled the tackle anything and the home side had their bonus point try mid way through the second half after more poor defending. Eventually Pont got some territory and a great angle from Nathan Meyrick combined with a lovely inside pass from Lee Butcher sent the centre over for a consolation try.
