Pont shutout Old T's in mud bath.

Pont hosted Old Tyleryans at the Welfare ground in league action last Saturday.

Pont started started strongly and had numerous scrums deep in the visitors 22. However a bit of white line fever was evident and the Old Tylerians defence held firm until eveuntually a powerful run from Jeff Williams saw the second row power over the tryline for his first league try of the season. Good interplay from Kevin Chamberlain and Nathan Meyrick then led to Matthew Williams going under the posts for his first try since rejoining Pont. Jay Williams then looked to have scored in a similar fashion to his brother after putting an Old T defender on his back, but the referee had seen a phantom knock on as the prop reached for the line. Kev Chamberlain then scored after a couple of missed tackles from the Old T's backline before his centre parter Ben Walker had a try disallowed just before half time for a knock on as he reached for the line after Matthew Davis had made a nice break and put him through.

Pont secured the bonus point shortly after half time when a well executed driving lineout saw Jarrad Hook get on the scoresheet. Pont then emptied the bench which saw former Risca Youth back rower Brady Reynolds make his senior debut and Rhys Powell added some fresh impetus making good yardage (when not falling over potholes). The 5th and final try came after good interplay between Ben Walker and Matthew Williams lead to Andrew Deneen touching town. The last quater was played with uncontested scrums and despite Pont's best efforts the final pass eluded them on a few occasions.

Final Score: Pontllanfraith 31-0  Old Tyleryans

Credit to Old Tyleryans who provided a much sterner test than the league table would suggest. Pont have a week off before hosting Bettws on 10th February at the earlier kick off time of 1.30pm to avoid clashing with Six Nations.
